Common PAD Symptoms

PAD symptoms often start subtly and worsen over time. Here are the most frequently reported symptoms:

Leg pain or cramping when walking (claudication): One of the earliest and most recognizable symptoms of PAD is muscle pain, tightness or cramping in your calves, thighs or buttocks during activity. The discomfort improves with rest.
Numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs: Reduced blood flow can cause your legs to feel heavy, fatigued or numb, especially after standing or walking.
Coldness in one leg or foot: A noticeable temperature difference between your legs may indicate poor circulation.
Slow-healing wounds on feet or toes: Cuts, blisters or sores that do not heal properly are a serious sign that blood isn’t reaching your tissues effectively.
Shiny skin, hair loss or changes in nail growth: PAD affects the health of your skin and hair, causing visible changes in texture and appearance.
Weak or absent foot pulses: A vascular specialist may detect diminished pulses in the feet, a strong indicator of impaired blood flow to the feet.
Color changes in the legs: Legs may appear pale, bluish or reddish depending on blood flow. PAD leg symptoms may worsen when your legs are elevated or lowered.
Leg pain at rest: As PAD becomes more advanced, pain can occur even when you’re sitting or lying down, especially at night. This is known as critical limb ischemia and requires urgent medical care.

PAD vs. PVD Symptoms: Understanding the Difference

PAD is a type of Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), but the terms aren’t interchangeable. PVD includes multiple diseases affecting blood vessels and may include arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels, while PAD specifically refers to arterial blockages.

Many of the symptoms of PAD and PVD may be similar. However, a common symptom unique to PAD is limb pain that starts during exercise and eases while you’re at rest. PVD, on the other hand, can present differently depending on the type of blood vessel involved. One form of condition, chronic venous insufficiency, can cause blood to flow backwards, causing pain and tissue damage.
