What Is Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Vein ablation is a nonsurgical procedure that involves inserting a catheter into the affected veins. Then, using an ablative tool, the vascular specialist heats the varicose or spider veins until they are sealed off from the rest of the surrounding blood vessels. With no way for blood to feed them, they break down over time and are eventually flushed out of the body.

Vein ablation, also known as endovenous laser ablation, is one of the most effective treatments available for spider veins, varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). At Premier Endovascular, our vascular specialists see these conditions every day, and in most healthy patients, we recommend this treatment to address aesthetic and medical concerns alike.

Benefits of Vein Ablations

Whether your varicose veins are painful, an aesthetic concern or both, Premier Endovascular’s specialists want to help you meet your goals. Some of the many reasons our patients choose endovenous laser ablation are because:

  • It is nonsurgical: Surgical procedures can bring up several concerns. While ablation does require anesthesia, it is not a surgery and will likely not leave any scars. It is an outpatient procedure, and you will be free to return home as soon as your treatment is complete, so it is excellent for people with busy schedules.
  • The recovery is fast: Because ablation is a minimally invasive procedure, most people experience little to no need for downtime following their appointment. You will be able to return to all of your normal activities within days as your body works around the treated vessels.
  • It improves circulation: Most varicose and spider veins are damaged and not perfusing blood as effectively as they could be, which may be the cause of some of the pain, swelling and discomfort you experience as a result. Removing them from your circulation means your body can work more efficiently in pumping blood through your extremities.
  • It relieves discomfort: One of the largest benefits of the vein ablation procedure for many patients is the discomfort and pain it relieves. The itching, burning, aches, bleeding and heaviness in your legs may be lessened as your body reroutes blood flow to avoid these veins.
  • It reduces the appearance of veins: Many people choose vein ablation simply because it can minimize or even eliminate the appearance of those blue and purple veins they see near the surface of their skin. In the days and weeks following the procedure, these veins should look lighter even on pale skin tones, giving you more self-confidence so you can feel your best.

Are There Risks?

As with any vascular procedure, there is some risk, but most of the side effects of vein ablations are minor and temporary. Following your appointment, there may be some swelling, tenderness and bruising. These symptoms should dissipate within a few days. However, if you experience serious leg pain, numbness or discoloration around the area, seek medical help immediately to avoid complications of infection or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
